What to Expect from a Personal Training Session

Getting involved in gym culture and building the motivation to exercise often can feel intimidating–especially if you have limited experience being at the gym. Do you feel safe and comfortable using the equipment? Do you have a friend with you? It may feel overwhelming to get started. When you walk through the door, you may wonder if the other gym-goers are judging your workout clothes or body shape. Whatever the case may be, getting started is always the hardest part.

One way to alleviate that fear is by using a personal trainer. Personal trainers can help you figure out what you want out of a workout, what’s best for you and your goals, and how to get you there in a way that’s friendly and easily accessible. Personal trainers are also beneficial when you’re trying to learn something new, like boxing for fitness, weight training, new cardio regimens, and more. But we might be getting a little ahead of ourselves! If you’re thinking about working with a personal trainer, here’s some information you might want to stick in your back pocket.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Personal Trainer?

Relying on a personal trainer when you’re working out can be extremely beneficial and get you off on the right foot when starting your fitness journey.

Customization

When you work with a personal trainer, you’re getting just that: a personal trainer. A personal trainer who truly knows their stuff will be key to achieving a personalized, unique experience for when you head to the gym.

For example, if you’re enrolled in beginner boxing classes because you’re wanting to start boxing for your fitness journey, that’s a great place to start. However, having a personal trainer ensures that you’ll know exactly what exercises to do, what areas to target, how to move without injuring yourself, and more. You’ll get much more insight on how to incorporate boxing for fitness into your workout routine than you’d ever get in beginner boxing classes.

A personal trainer is also going to be a great resource for you if you have any kind of physical limitations, like a chronic pain condition, pregnancy, medicinal side effects, and more. You might not be able to do a traditional workout, but a personal trainer will surely be able to point you in the right direction to get the most bang for your buck.

Learn the Basics

A personal trainer isn’t going to throw you into the deep end and see if you float. Instead, when you hire a personal trainer, they’ll start you from the ground up so that you know all of the basics going in.

Learning the proper techniques, how to calculate the right amount of weight, what stretches are best to prevent injuries, and more are just part of a personal trainer’s day-to-day workflow. Through this, you’ll be able to make the most out of your workout and make sure that you aren’t going to accidentally injure yourself in the process!

Safety

A personal trainer doesn’t just walk you through different workout routines–it’s also their job to teach you safe workout practices to ensure you don’t hurt yourself while at the gym. If you have limited experience working out, especially with large equipment, then spending time with a personal trainer can be a simple act that prevents great pain.

Staying Motivated and Engaged

Staying motivated and engaged long-term can be extremely difficult when you’re working out, but a personal trainer can help you stay on top of it. When you work out with a personal trainer, it’s like having your cheerleader. Your trainer will be able to help you see what’s working out for you, see what’s not going as well as you might like, and work with you to make those exercises more accessible.

Your personal trainer will also be able to help you go into a workout feeling positive about yourself. No one knows how much closer you’re getting to any of your fitness goals like your personal trainer does, so they’ll be able to give you the encouragement you need to keep going when you feel like you might not be making progress.

Because your trainer personalizes your workouts for you, they’re bound to be less boring and repetitive. If you like boxing for fitness in your exercise routine, then beginner boxing classes may seem like a solid choice from the outset. Classes, however, can sometimes seem repetitive, which means you might not feel like you’re getting anything out of them if you’re doing the same activity over and over again.

A personal trainer helps to fix that issue. They’ll be able to curate boxing workouts and exercises for you that make you feel pumped up and excited to be there and help you to have fun! After all, you’re more likely to continue participating in something that you enjoy doing.

What Will My First Meeting Be Like?

When you go in for your initial meeting, you don’t need to worry. When you first start speaking with your personal trainer, they aren’t going to immediately throw you into working out. The whole point of working with a personal trainer is to receive a personalized workout and personalized exercise plan. You can’t develop a plan like that if you don’t know your client!

Getting to know you involves a lot of different steps. Your trainer may want to do some assessments to see where you’re at physically so that they can better create a program that’s individualized for you. If you’re only able to walk a mile when you start, creating a cardio-heavy workout that involves running multiple miles a day isn’t going to be what’s best for you and your needs! Your trainer also uses these assessments to determine what weight level you might be at, what your health and fitness needs are, and more.

They may even ask you what you’re interested in, like weight training, cardio, yoga, or boxing. Fitness looks different for everyone, after all, and there isn’t going to be a one-size-fits-all training plan for everyone. Your trainer is there to curate your experience for you and you alone.

Personal Training Schedule

Much like the rest of your personal trainer experience, creating your schedule is going to be different for everyone. You may only meet with your trainer once a week to work on your form, learn new workouts, and more. However, you may also be on the other side of the spectrum where you meet with your personal trainer multiple times a week to help keep you motivated and curate your experience to what you need it to be.

Whatever kind of schedule you choose or your personal trainer selects for you, be sure it’s in the best interests of you and your goals. Because what is having a personal trainer all about but being excited about getting healthy?
